The Tamil Nadu government has launched a US$2 billion five-year programme to provide 6.8 million free laptops to students from low-income families.
Under the free laptop scheme, the local government has begun handing out the first batch of the laptops earlier this month to the qualified secondary school and public university students.
According to senior government official, the project will cost Rs 10,200 crore.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa has allocated Rs 912 crore for the distribution of the 9.12 lakh laptops this year and the remaining units will be deployed in the next four years.
The government said that the allocation to laptop computer this year constitutes less than three per cent of budgeted revenue receipts.
Each laptop that is being deployed is enabled with Intel Pentium Dual Core P6200 or Equivalent AMD Processor with 2 GB DDR3 SD RAM at 1066 Mhz speed, 14 inch screen, 320 GB hard disk drive and in-built camera.
“We want the laptops to be equipped with the best software, hardware and applications to help the students,” information and technology minister Udayakumar said.
