The Assam government will soon open a 24*7 child helpline to deal with complaints of corporal punishment and child rights violation quickly and effectively.
The helpline will be accessible via telephone and SMS besides the traditional letters. The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) will monitor all complaints using a transparent ‘alert and action’ online mechanism.
Talking to FutureGov, Dr. Suchitra Kakoty, Chairperson, Assam SCPCR, said the helpline will be opened as a follow up to the Assam government recently implementing the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The RTE envisages protection of child rights and recommends that no corporal punishment be given under any circumstances. Kakoty said helpline may become functional by the beginning of next year.
The round-the-clock functional helpline will record but not reveal the identity of the complainant. The SCPCR will frame charges against the teacher on the basis of the complaint in consultation with the education department. The allegation will be verified by concerned authorities before framing charges. Disciplinary action will be taken against teachers who will be found guilty.
