Keeping in view the deep penetration of mobile phones even in far flung rural areas, Madhya Pradesh has decided to launch an SMS service for the consumers of the Public Distribution System (PDS).
The SMS alerts will inform people about the date of availability of ration under the PDS at the fair price shop in their respective areas. It will save them the embarrassment of returning home empty-handed from ration shops owing to non-availability of foodgrains. It will also deter shopkeepers from hoarding and diverting grains for purposes other than the PDS.
The State Civil Supplies Department will be the nodal agency for the scheme. September 22 was the last date for giving shape to tenders of service provider companies.
Consumers will be able to register themselves online and receive the alerts. For this purpose, National Informatics Centre (NIC) has developed software for Food and Civil Supplies Corporation. The software will help store necessary information about the registered users such as name, address, code number of the fair price shop of his/her area and will send SMSes based on the provided information.
