The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has made its official twitter account fully operational and said it will tweet regular updates on matters related to the Ministry.
Available as ‘mediamha’ on Twitter, the Ministry’s account was opened in June. It, however, just had a few tweets such as the announcement of the appointment of R.K. Singh as the new Home Secretary till last month.
The latest tweets are related to the recent earthquake in Sikkim – the death toll, relief measures, etc. The account has 106 tweets to its credit till date and while it is following 52 accounts, it is being followed by 371.
The MHA has joined ranks with the Ministry of External Affairs which opened its official twitter account under the name ‘IndianDiplomacy’ in July last year and has more than 15,000 followers.
India has at least 17 million Facebook and 4.5 million Twitter users and this number is increasing rapidly. Tweeting has become a trend for various public figures and organisations to leverage social media and the Indian government seems to have taken to it to ensure active citizen participation and information dissemination. Various government organisations have also created Facebook pages and put them to good use.
