Taking a cue from the governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra, Karnataka is planning to introduce e-voting on a trial basis during the 2013 municipal elections.
Online voting was implemented at the recent local polls in Gujarat. Maharashtra is preparing for online elections in 2012.
State Election Commissioner C R Chikkamath said the commission is planning to set up a committee that will create a model for e-voting in the state. Talks were on with technology company, Infosys, regarding the issue. The committee will comprise officers from urban development, e-governance, directorate of municipal administration and rural development and panchayati departments.
In 2013, elections will be held for 209 urban local bodies. The commission hopes that online voting will considerably increase voters’ participation, especially among the urban group.
