Government to connect FCI warehouses

In a bid to check the diversion of commodities allocated by the Centre for the Public Distribution System (PDS), the Government of India has decided to install CCTV cameras in the warehouses of the Food Corporation of India (FCI). It will help the government monitor the movement and distribution of foodgrains.

The Ministry of Food and Public Distribution has already approved the project’s pilot, which will be centrally monitored by the system installed in the Ministry.

The FCI has already put into place a system of computerised linkages which ensures that for a particular FCI warehouse, the Ministry receives daily updates on the movement of foodgrains (the quantity that comes in as well as goes out) and the length of time for which it was stored. A huge portion of the grains meant for reaching the poor through the fair price shops of the government reach the open market due to prevalent malpractices in the absence of proper tracking and monitoring of its movement.

Despite efforts by certain states such as launching a GPS-based tracking system, the Centre has not really done its bit towards using technology for ensuring proper storage, maintenance and distribution of foodgrains.
