Hosting applications on the cloud have a lot of advantages like saving money on procuring infrastructure to up scaling the number of users on the fly.
Speaking to Futuregov on adoption of cloud computing Rajesh Verma, Principal Director, Information Technology, Government of Sikkim says, “Cloud computing is only meaningful if you have robust data communication links and ubiquitous internet connectivity. This has yet to happen in Sikkim. Hopefully in a couple of years the scenario will improve and then we could explore the possibility of adopting cloud technologies. However till then we have to remain grounded with our own State Data Centre”.
Sikkim has some inherent problems related to connectivity because of a hilly terrain. There is only one optical fibre link to the districts in Sikkim and back to Gangtok. The links fail if the optical fibre cable breaks and this happens very frequently due to landslides and heavy rainfall.
