In a bid to monitor traffic and increase surveillance, the police have decided to mount a network of Close Circuit Television (CCTv) cameras in Surat, Gujarat.
Though the cameras would be installed at sensitive and important locations across the city, the exact locations are yet to be finalised. These cameras would be under a round-the-clock scrutiny and a special control room has been designed and designated for the same at the police headquarters. These cameras would be directly attached to the control room.
Once the spots are finalised, the district police would request the State government to sanction the supply of these cameras.
Apart from the fixed cameras, the police are also planning to mount high-resolution cameras on vehicles which would do the rounds of the city on the lines of Police Control vans to keep a tab on any anti-social activities.
The city police believe that CCTV camera footages would help them in identifying criminals as well as act as a deterrent for those who violate traffic norms.
