Jharkhand launches Health Hotline to address grievances

Following in the footsteps of neighbouring Bihar, Jharkhand has launched a health hotline for sprucing up the healthcare facilities in the State.

The State’s health and family welfare department has floated a toll free number, 1800-3456-524, to help people appropriate medical care as well as lodge their grievances and get them addressed in a time-bound manner. State’s Health Services Director Praveen Chandra said the number, first given to Mukhya Mantri Janani Suraksha Yojna, has also been assigned to this scheme to receive the general public’s feedback about healthcare facilities across the State.

One can call the given number to lodge a complaint with one’s name and location. For now, one person has been assigned to lodge complaints and forward the same to the concerned official. This will ensure a speedy response, bring in transparency and check corruption. However, landlines and not mobile phones can be used to register complaints.

This facility has been floated in the view of increasing number of complaints about expectant mothers in far-flung places not receiving benefits of various government schemes despite the huge amount of money doled out against the same.

The State government’s Mukhya Mantri Janani Suraksha Yojna, launched in April 2006 on the lines of the National Rural Health Mission’s Janani Suraksha Yojna, promises Rs. 1,400 to the expectant mother irrespective of her economic status.

Bihar had launched a similar service last month. State Health Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey had inaugurated the toll-free number — 1911 — and called it a continuation of Swasth Bihar Muhim (Healthy Bihar Scheme). People can also lodge their complaint by sending a text message on +91 9711981981 or through the Internet by using the link for ‘grievance redressal system’ on the website of the State Health Society, www.statehealthsocietybihar.org. The system automatically generates a complaint number which can be used for following up on the same.
