In a first in Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur’s District Jail and District Court have been connected using videoconferencing facility. A video camera, a big screen and a computer have been installed at both the places to facilitate the virtual hearing of cases.
The facility would be used in cases involving petty crimes or where the chargesheet has not yet been filed. Cases where the accused are thought to be involved in serious crimes or which are under trial in a court would not be heard using this facility.
This will speed up the slow judicial system of the country, prevent any escapes while being transported from the jail to the court and lower the cost of the exercise by saving on the deployment of policemen, security charges and transportation.
It is a part of the nationwide project to connect jails with courts using a videoconferencing system. The system is already functional in States such as Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana and Bihar.
