Maheswaram village in the Rang Reddy district of Andhra Pradesh has started distributing ration through the Public Distribution System by using data gathered for the Aadhar project. It entails the use of smart cards with biometric authentication.
The civil supplies department has linked PDS to Aadhar to minimise corruption and ensure that the ration reaches those it is meant for. The Government is saving on almost 20% of the ration as biometric authentication ensures that no ration is withdrawn in the name of the deceased or ‘benami’ cardholders.
The State government is now looking at linking Aadhar to National Rural Employment Guarantee Act works, pensions and Aarogyasri (flagship scheme of the State government to improve access of Below Poverty Line families to quality medical care) cards. A steering committee has been formed to report on the feasibility of linking these schemes to Aadhar.
Maheswaram has been chosen to act as the subject for each of these projects on a pilot basis before it is extended across the State.
