Helpline to help trace towed-away vehicles in Delhi

The Delhi Traffic Police have launched a special helpline for those who park their vehicles in non-parking zones.

Vehicle owners now have the option of either calling 011-23010101 or sending an SMS to +91 9811452220 to find out if their vehicle was towed away, the police station it has been taken to and the penalty amount that needs to be paid.

The vehicle owner just needs to send the SMS with the registration number of the vehicle to the helpline number. The person first receives an acknowledgement of the same followed by the details of the vehicle. While the system responds with the name and the telephone number of the place if the vehicle is towed away, a ‘no data available’ message lands in the complainant’s inbox if there is no data available on the vehicle with the given registration number.

The system checks for the registration number in a central server which is constantly updated by crane operators. With this, there would now be a central record of towed away vehicles in the city. It was made mandatory for crane operators to photograph a vehicle before lifting it since April this year. It is a welcome step given the fact that more than 600 vehicles are towed away from no-parking zones across Delhi every day and owners find it difficult to trace their vehicles.
