The State’s Information Technology Department has developed a software to interlink all government libraries. Libraries will then be able to share books, video CDs, etc.

An online catalogue with details such as the author and the subject will be made available to the members once they submit their membership numbers online. This will prevent thefts as well as ensure that books are returned on the designated dates.

The government also has plans to gradually upload all the available books online and start lending e-books.

Member libraries of Haryana Public Library System are currently using Software for University Libraries (SOUL) software to e-catalogue their collection, said Amandeep Kapila, a software consultant at IGNOU who closely tracks public libraries and runs a website on the same. He added that though some public libraries in the State never started, others have catalogued a great proportion of their collection.

SOUL is an integrated library management software designed and developed by University Grants Commission (UGC) and is compliant to international standards for bibliographic formats, networking ans circulation protocols.
