Kerala’s IT@School Project has given ICT training to all 238 visually challenged government school teachers in the State.
The training, conducted using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)-based screen reading software called ORCA, was delivered simultaneously at the Project’s training centres present across the State.
All trainee participants were first familiarised with typing on the keyboard and then taught the fundamentals – Internet navigation, Word processing, Folder creation, Data transfer using Pen Drives/Compact Discs, use of shortcut keys, audio and video playing options, etc.
ORCA not allows the user to modify the applications as per his/her needs but also enables sharing the applications with anyone as it is free. Most of the screen reading software available in the market come with a price tag and restrictions on file sharing.
IT@School Executive Director K. Anvar Sadath said in a release, “Integrating ICT in education is our mission and in order to implement a complete ICT enabled educational system in the State, it was important that differently abled teachers are trained in ICT, which not only boosts their confidence but also has a positive impact in classrooms.”
