Security is an important issue in this era of Information Technology. It gets integrated into public life and the socio economic landscape of the country. There is a lot of information on the internet and it needs to be protected. Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) formed by the Department of Information Technology, Government of India does its fair share to ensure that this is met.
In an exclusive interview with FutureGov, Gulshan Rai, Director General, CERT-In, Department of Information Technology, Government of India, said that there is a need for new policies and policies that enable citizens to transact confidently while they are connected to the internet without having security fears.
“The government has a focused strategy when it comes to security and has components like Legal Framework, The Best Practices that need to be implemented, National Watch and Warning System, R&D, Training and Awareness,” He said.
CERT-In on the whole addresses all security related issues and is constantly on the lookout for help from the industry to spread alertness on security. “In Training and Awareness we address many touch points like the threats on opening an unknown file, measures to secure a system, training the police on cyber forensics and also helping them present a case in the court of law,” He added.
CERT-In regulates applications before they go live. “All sites need to be hosted in the country and in a secure infrastructure. The sites undergo suitable auditing in regards to security. Every time there is a change in hardware or software, sites are subjected to auditing and are checked for Penetration and Vulnerability. No audit is 100% foolproof; sometimes issues might be seen after a year. So, the process of auditing is important and not the technology, always buy original software and from a trusted source” comments Gulshan.
