3D GIS Project Steps Up Delhi’s Internal Security

In a first of its kind project in the country, the Department of Information Technology, Government of Delhi, has nearly completed digitisation and mapping of all underground and over ground assets like telephone lines, water pipes and other public utilities in three dimensional digital format.

Known as the Delhi State Spatial Data Infrastructure (DSSDI) or 3D GIS project, it has mapped out all the underground utilities in the city using state-of-art technology of ”ground probing radars”. The government will soon unveil a unique portal comprising images and digital details of all the over ground and underground utilities and it will be made available to the departments.

Savitur Prasad, Secretary of Department of Information Technology, Delhi, told FutureGov, “First we took aerial photographs of entire Delhi. Then we created a digital elevation model. Next, we worked on Ortho-Photos, vectorisation, ground validation, Terra-vision machine and then the entire digital base of Delhi was built. Then we linked all government departments to the State Spatial Data Infrastructure”.

One of the key advantages of this project is the facilitation of deploying 64 CCTV cameras all over Delhi to improve security measures. Each of these cameras are linked to one of the 10 monitoring centres implying 6.4 camera feed coming to one monitoring centre. These monitoring centres are linked to two control centres – Delhi Secretariat and the Production office of the Survey of India where the 3D GIS project is headquartered.
